This week I have my nose in a festive book - I'm currently reading Dickens at Christmas. This title has been on my wishlist since its release and I'm glad to finally be delving into some festive works of Charles Dickens. I have read a number of his novels, and also A Christmas Carol prior to this collection of stories and essay snippets.
The first lines I'm going to share today are taken from A Christmas Carol, undoubtedly his most notable festive work.
FIRST LINES
Marley was dead: to begin with. There is no doubt whatever about that. The register of his burial was signed by clergyman, the clerk, the undertaker, and the chief mourner. Scrooge signed it: and Scrooge's name was good upon 'Change, for anything he chose to put his had to. Old Marley was as dead as a door-nail.

my very favorite Christmas story!
ReplyDeleteOne of mine also :-) I try to reread it every year!
DeleteNooooooooooo It's not Christmastime yet.
ReplyDeleteHaha! The festive season is a while away yet.. I'm starting my reading early so I can complete some of the many festive books on my shelves!
DeleteDefinitely a classic :) Thanks for stopping by!
ReplyDeleteColletta
I love a classic; especially this time of year!
DeleteI am not quite ready to read Christmas books, but I do love seeing them...and thinking about them. Thanks! And thanks for visiting my blog.
ReplyDeleteHaha! I get that! I'm starting my festive reading a little earlier than I usually do as I have a good number of such books sitting unread on my shelves. This is a chunky one at 500 pages, so it'll take me a while to get through it!
DeleteI love the cover and yes I'd read this --next month.
ReplyDeleteI usually start my Christmas reading in December too, but I'm hoping to knock a few of my festive reads of my unread shelf this year, so an early start for me!
DeleteA Christmas Carol is one of my favorite classics. I usually read it every Christmas. I'm curious about the other stories in this book.
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to return to old favourites every now and then :-)
DeleteThe beginning gives me goosebumps. I always think of Charles Dickens as a happy man because his novels take you far away from yourself. Marley, I love that name. Have fun reading it.
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteLove the beginning. Bit early for Christmas stories yet though. Enjoy :-)
ReplyDeleteThat seems to be the general consensus - I've started my Christmas reading a little early this year as I have number of such books on my unread shelf, and I hope to make a good dent in them all; including this chunkster!
DeleteThis is the only Dickens I've read and I did enjoy it. Not sure I'd read it again but would definitely recommend carrying on reading to others.
ReplyDeleteI can see why it would be a one time read for some - I tend to reread it each year. Thanks for sharing :-)
Deleteooh, I read this book every year! And it is getting very near to that time of the year, isn't it! I hope you like it. I've just finished Dickens' David Copperfield (a whooping 867 pages) and I loved it so much.
ReplyDeleteWow - that's quite the achievement! Happy reading!
DeleteI've read A Christmas Carol most years since I was 10 and I still love it - I need more time so that I can revisit some of Charles Dickens other books :-)
