I've always been someone who puts quite a bit of thought in to my first book choice of the year, and that's one of the reasons I love The First Book of the Year linky hosted by Sheila of Book Journey.
Last year, I explained how I feel like the book I enter the new year with leads a precedent for the rest of my reading choices throughout the year, and I know this thought process may seem a little kooky to some, but it makes perfect sense to me.
I started 2016 reading The Marble Collector by Cecelia Ahern, which I loved, and I ended up having such a successful reading year - my average book rating (as informed by Goodreads) was 4.3. It seems that I'm starting a tradition of sorts now, as I'm starting 2017 with a Cecelia Ahern novel also.
Cecelia Ahern is one of my all time favourite authors - I own all of her books and she is very much a tried and true writer for me. I guess in many ways I'm playing it very safe by entering the new year with her newest release - Lyrebird - however I'm keen to delve into her latest offering and get enveloped in Ahern's story telling.
You never know... There is always next year to step outside my comfort zone with the first book of the year.
WHAT BOOK ARE YOU STARTING 2017 WITH?
Here's hoping you have an equally successful reading year in 2017 Jade 😊
ReplyDeleteThanks, Cleo - and to you!
DeleteHope your plan works and you have a good reading year. Have wonderful 2017 x
ReplyDeleteThank you, Emma. I hope you have a good reading year also!
DeleteI think you are right. If you read a good book on January 1st, you will read good books all year! Here's hoping that's true.

Hopefully so!!
DeleteWishing you Peace, joy and good health in 2017 Jade. Hope to get many more book suggestions from you this year. (I've read a few books by Ahern but nothing recently.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Diane - and to you!
DeleteIf you were interested in picking up anything new by Ahern then I'd recommend her 2015 release of The Marble Collector; such a great read.
Nothing wrong with playing it safe, as starting the new year with a favourite author seems perfect to me! I loved Lyrebird.
ReplyDeleteI'm roughly 150+ pages in so far and absolutely loving it - such an absorbing read!
DeleteAnother good title, I like your post.
ReplyDeleteThank you! Happy reading in 2017!
DeleteI agree that the first book of the year sets the tone for the rest of the year. And I'm struggling with which one to start with!!! I don't know what mood I'm in right now. I need to figure it out today. Lol.
ReplyDeleteI hope you love your first book of 2017! I'm sure you will since she is one of your favs. Happy New Year, Jade!
Ah, the book picking struggle! I hope you're able to settle on a good title to start the year with, Brandie.
DeleteThanks - and to you!
I hope you enjoy it! I’m starting with Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi.
ReplyDeleteAj @ Read All The Things!
Thanks, and you! I've heard good things about your book of choice. Happy reading!
DeleteI'm so glad you did a First Book post because you totally just left me in suspense. LOL. I hope you love Lyrebird. It really is a good idea to start with an author you love!
ReplyDeleteAh haha! You can't go wrong with picking an author you know and love. Happy reading in 2017 and enjoy your first read!
DeleteLove the story about how you like to choose books.

My First Book Of The Year
Thank you, Elizabeth. Happy reading in 2017!
DeleteI honestly have no idea what my first book will end up being. I took a bit of a reading break at the end of 2016, so now I have a fresh slate to start off on!
ReplyDeleteOoo... A fresh slate is always nice, and perfect for a brand new year. I hope you enjoy whatever it is you pick up next!
DeleteI hope your reading year is just as wonderful n 2017... good plan to start with a tried and true author. Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteThank you - and to you!
DeleteI enjoy Ahern, too, but haven't read one of her books in a while. I must change that!
ReplyDeleteI like how books (or a series) sometimes seem to pick us....Enjoy!
Thanks for visiting my blog.
I really loved her 2015 release of The Marble Collector, and so far the same can be said for Lyrebird.
DeleteSo true! Happy reading in 2017!
Great choice. I intend reading this one, I saw a review by Trish Hannon that made me want to read it. Hope you enjoy it. Happy New Year.
ReplyDeleteTrish's review was great and really piqued my interest further on this title. I hope you enjoy if and when you get round to reading it. Wishing you a happy new year!
DeleteI don't put a lot of thought in ahead of time, but I do love pulling a book off the shelf to start a fresh new year. The fact that it indeed comes from my own shelf always feels like a good start to working from my own shelves for the year. Of course I have a few things in process, but I finished HP #2 (technically the morning of Jan 1st, but I'm counting it for 2016, there was just too little left to count for 2017!), so I'll be ready for a new "main" read soon (non-audio, non-anthology, etc.) and am enjoying contemplating what that will be! Happy new year and happy reading :)
ReplyDeleteI think the method in which you pick your first book of the year sounds great - I imagine you browsing your shelves and the book picking you almost.
DeleteYay for finishing the second HP; I'd totally count it towards 2016 also!
Whatever book you start the new year with, I hope you enjoy! Wishing you and your family the happiest of new years.
Jade, I can't wait to read Marble Collector, I have to order it as it is not available on Kindle but it was one of my most looked forward to books. Great choice, hope it is the foundation for another great year.
ReplyDeleteAfter all this time, I hope you enjoy it!! It was such a lovely read.
DeleteThank you - happy reading in 2017!
I'm starting this year with a tried and true author as well. I started last year with an unknown author and it didn't go well. I have yet to read Cecilia Ahern but now I really want to try her books. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteYou can't go wrong with a tried and true author. I hope you enjoyed your first book of the year.
DeleteCecelia Ahern has a pretty long list of novels; if you wanted to try a more recent novel of hers than I'd recommend The Marble Collector.
I think it is good to start out with one you're confident of, and a tried and true author is a great way to go! Hope it sets the year off right. :)
ReplyDeleteHappy new Year!
The book didn't quite live up to my expectations, but I'm glad I started the new year with a familiar story teller.
DeleteHappy new year!
Just last year I really started thinking about what would be my first read of the year when before I never gave it a second thought. I don't think you are kooky at all. I now look forward to really thinking about what book to read to start my year off right. :) This year I picked The Hating Game because I wanted something to give me good feels and the book was getting a lot of good hype. It didn't disappoint. I read it in one day! Enjoy your pick. Happy Reading!
ReplyDeleteIt's fun having a think about which book to start the year with - it can be quite a hard making a decision!
DeleteWow - one day, quite the read! I'm glad you enjoyed your first book of the year so much, and I hope it sets the tone for the rest of your reading.
Ohh, I bought Lyrebird for my boyfriend's mum for Christmas, and I just CANNOT wait for her to finish so I can read it (how mean is that?!). I'm kicking off 2017 with the same book I finished 2016 with - The Complete Sherlock Holmes collection by Arthur Conan Doyle. It's enormous, but such a lovely read!

Haha - well I hope both you and your boyfriend's mum enjoy Lyrebird!
DeleteStarting the new year with Sherlock Holmes sounds like a good way to start 2017; I love the collection of stories. Happy reading!
